Traditional House Kitchen (Paon)

The traditional kitchen in Penglipuran Village, known as the paon, is an essential part of every family compound and serves as the center of daily cooking and household activities. More than just a functional space, the paon reflects the community’s simple way of life and its deep connection to Balinese traditions. Built primarily from natural materials—especially bamboo, along with wood and other locally available resources—the kitchen embodies the villagers’ traditional knowledge and sustainable use of the natural environment. Although modest in design, the paon holds significant cultural value, representing generations of inherited practices and local wisdom. It demonstrates that the uniqueness of Penglipuran Village lies not only in its distinctive architecture but also in the everyday traditions that preserve ancestral heritage, simplicity, and harmony with nature.
