Angkul Angkul

Angkul-angkul is the traditional entrance gate to a family compound in Penglipuran Village and one of the village’s most distinctive architectural features. More than simply serving as an entrance, it marks the transition between the public space and the private family residence while symbolizing respect and hospitality toward every visitor. Philosophically, the angkul-angkul represents harmony, order, and a strong sense of community. Its remarkably uniform design reflects the values of equality, adherence to awig-awig (customary law), and the principles of Tri Hita Karana—the Balinese philosophy that promotes harmony among humans, God, fellow human beings, and the natural environment. Constructed from locally sourced materials such as red brick, natural stone, wood, and bamboo roofing, the angkul-angkul also exemplifies the community’s local wisdom in sustainably utilizing natural resources while preserving its architectural heritage.
